Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2

For this assignment, I interviewed another three people that fit into my segment—people who own guns or live in a house with guns and have children—but this time I asked for alternative solutions to my design of a gun lock with a verbal lock. Each of my interviewees suggested the common lock that is locked with either a key or a padlock. Two of them suggested the recently released fingerprint locked guns. The second person I interviewed offered the most interesting alternative: a gun lock that is opened with one’s eye. This lock would be very similar to that of the fingerprint but rather than unlocking with a fingerprint it unlocks when scanning someone’s eye.

The next aspect I asked my interviewees was where they were they would be most likely to purchase a gun lock. Surprisingly, two out of three of my interviewees said that they would most probably buy a gun lock at a store and only one of them said they would buy it online. This surprised me because I thought most people would willing to buy a gun lock online rather than in person. I asked those who said that they would rather purchase in a store why they preferred a store and they said that they only felt comfortable buying guns in person and that they applied the same approach to buying gun locks.

Next I asked the interviewees what determined the ‘rightness’ of their purchase. They all agreed that the most important factor in determining the ‘rightness’ of their purchase was how well the gun lock worked. This was obvious considering that this product is designed to protect those who own guns. The lock needs to lock and unlock perfectly when it is supposed to. The second aspect that was important when considering ‘rightness’ was price. The price of the lock needs to be reasonable in order for people to buy it.

The conclusion I came up with in this exercise was that I believe that my product would be viable if it was sold in stores. The people in my interviews seemed to really care if the product worked (which is obvious). I believe that I can get my product to work and that it would work better than the currently available products and be cheaper than the new alternative suggested by my interviewee, making it the best product available.

  1. Hi,
I think you made an interesting point that it was surprising that 2/3 people you interviewed would rather buy a lock in store than online. I would ask more people in your segment to decide if this is true for the majority or just in the people you interviewed. I agree one reason people may want to buy in store is to confirm that the product works as described. You made some great points. Keep up the good work.

  2. Hey.
For your product I feel like there are many alternative options, but yours would be different in that if would be more secure than the alternative options. I also agree that your product would work best if it was sold in stores. When it comes to something as serious as gun safety people are going to want to see the product before they buy it. I really like the idea of your product and I think as long as it is good quality it will do better than the other products available because the idea is unique. I feel like your interviews gave you a lot of useful information for your product.
